Maruti Suzuki Enhances SUV Lineup

Debut of the Electric SUV

Maruti Suzuki will launch its first electric vehicle, called the e-Vitara, will take place sometime by September 2025. Built up on the Heartect-e platform, this SUV offers two batteries with 49kWh and 61 kWh capacity which enables a range of over 500km. Priced at around ₹17 lakh to ₹22.5 lakh, the e-Vitara will compete with the Hyundai Creta EV and Tata Curvv EV. Features include Level 2 ADAS advanced safety and a premium cabin to target eco-friendly buyers.

New Seven-Seater SUV

A new three-row Grand Vitara, Y17 being the codename, is coming by the end of 2025. This will be slightly longer than the five-seater version and is expected to come with a 1.5L petrol engine as well as a petrol-hybrid version. The expected price range for this car would be between ₹15 lakh and ₹25 lakh, so it is expected to rival Mahindra’s XUV700 and the Tata Safari. All production for this would take place at Maruti’s Kharkhoda plant, which is expected to be operational by 2025.

Market Strategy

Maruti will now be increasing this share of the SUV market from 3% to 6% in FY26, with the ultimate goal of reaching 20% by FY36. The e-Vitara and the seven-seater Grand Vitara will work towards reinforcing the Nexa premium portfolio of Maruti. It would now reflect mobile audience needs with the hybrid and e-vehicle portfolio. Maruti is posturing as a global player with the 70k units of e-Vitara earmarked for exports in FY26. All the technologies them are shared between Maruti Suzuki and Toyota because the export model is built on the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV. The updated design of the seven-seater Grand Vitara, which has imbibed design cues from the e-Vitara, will feature a new grille and Level 2 ADAS, increasing its attractiveness to buyers. All of these come against the likes of Hyundai and Kia.

Future Outlook

The Maruti Suzuki SUV expansion indicates a step towards green mobility. The Kharkhoda facility will ensure enough production capacity to service the domestic and export needs. The e-Vitara and the seven-seater Grand Vitara together target a family and tech-savvy buyer.
