Regina HPE Chain Does Not Need Lubrication at all

  • Removes the need for periodic relubrication
  • Uses ta-C coating on rollers and bushings
  • Comes in 520 and 525 sizes with steel sprocket kits

Regina HPE chain ups the ante on motorcycle chain technology. HPE stands for High Performance Endurance and its objective is to reduce the regular cleaning and relubrication work that chain-driven motorcycles demand regularly. Dust, rain and city grime makes chain care a regular job and many owners either delay it or do it poorly. The Regina HPE chain is designed to remove the need for traditional periodic relubrication while still offering durability and performance similar to, or better than, a well-maintained conventional Z-ring chain.

The HPE chain is coated with tetrahedral amorphous carbon, or ta-C. It belongs to the Diamond-Like-Carbon family of coatings and is applied to the surfaces of the rollers and bushings. Regina says this coating combines very high hardness with a low coefficient of friction. The internal parts of the chain move with less resistance thereby improving mechanical efficiency making the drivetrain feel smoother and reducing wear over time. The chain is available in 520 and 525 sizes giving it a fairly wide potential fitment range, covering many middleweight and premium motorcycles.

And since the chain does not need regular relubrication, it keeps the motorcycle cleaner and reduce splatter on the wheel, swingarm, number plate area and bodywork. The HPE chain can also help reduce operating costs because riders do not need to keep buying chain lubricants and cleaners at the same frequency.

But do note, HPE chain must be paired only with steel sprockets. Some riders use aluminium rear sprockets to save weight, especially on sportier motorcycles or modified bikes, but Regina does not recommend such applications with HPE technology. HPE kits use specially designed and treated steel front and rear sprockets to ensure the complete final-drive system works properly.

The HPE is great for touring riders who won’t have to carry chain lube with them. City riders on the other hand usually ride short distances in dusty conditions and then park the bike without checking the chain. HPEs lower-maintenance can reduce the risk of not maintaining the chain at all for most.
