Sena VORTEX Intercom for Everyday Riders

  • Offers up to 27 hours of talk time
  • Two-way Bluetooth Intercom works across 1.2km
  • Magnetic mounting and wireless charging

Sena releases VORTEX as its newest Bluetooth communication system for everyday motorcycle riders. The device sits within Sena’s more accessible communication range and focuses on features that commuters, pillions and small touring groups are likely to use regularly. For the VORTEX, Sena has concentrated on battery life, simple pairing, weather resistance and an installation design that should make the unit easier.

Its headline figure of up to 27 hours of talk time from one charge is going to be the most attractive attribute. It should be enough for several days of commuting or a full touring weekend, depending on how frequently the rider uses music, calls and intercom communication. VORTEX uses automatic power management to reduce unnecessary battery consumption.

The system supports two-way Bluetooth Intercom communication over a claimed distance of up to 1.2km. Now know that this maximum range figure will depend on traffic, buildings, hills, trees and the position of the two riders. Even so, the quoted figure should be enough for two motorcycles travelling together on open roads. The details do not mention Sena Mesh Intercom or large-group communication, so riders planning to connect with several motorcycles may need to consider a higher-spec Sena unit. But then many riders do not need a large communication network, so that limitation is fine for most.

New Quick Pair Button should further add to practicality. Instead of holding a button for several seconds and waiting for an audio prompt or flashing light, VORTEX has a dedicated button to start the pairing process with a single press. Physical installation has been simplified through a magnetic mounting system. This allows the main communication unit to be attached or removed quickly. A rider can therefore take the device off the helmet for charging, security or storage without dealing with clips and locking tabs each time.

Wireless charging compatibility is another useful convenience feature. It means the VORTEX can be placed on a compatible charging surface instead of requiring a cable to be connected each time. It comes with Sena’s second-generation HD speakers delivering clearer and stronger audio for calls, navigation, music and intercom conversations. Advanced Noise Control is included to reduce wind and ambient sound during conversations.

The system is rated IPX7 for water-resistance rating. Also the five-button interface has been designed for use with gloves. VORTEX additionally includes FM radio as an entertainment option that does not depend on a phone signal or streaming service. It also supports over-the-air firmware updates through the Sena Motorcycles App.

Customisable faceplates will allow riders to alter the appearance of the main unit. This offers some personalisation without requiring customers to replace the complete device.
