India Records Decline In Superbike Sales In 2023; 3,311 Units Sold

India is one of the biggest markets for two-wheelers in the world. This is evident in the form of the huge number of motorcycles and scooters dominating Indian roads. A big percentage of these sales numbers in the two-wheeler market is recorded by entry-level motorcycles between 100-300 cc range. These big numbers often manage to dominate the low sales volume of the big bikes. Hence, here we take a look at the yearly sales data for the bigger bikes. Before we dive into details, it is essential to note that the data does not include the numbers of Ducati, Benelli, and BMW Motorrad.

Based on the data released, the Indian market recorded sales of 3,311 units of the big bikes in 2023. This is 428 units less than the 3,739 units sold in 2022. A big part of the sales number of 2023 is dominated by Japanese big bikes sold in the Indian market. This includes models from brands like Suzuki, and Kawasaki. Meanwhile, it also takes account of the units dispatched by Triumph, Harley Davidson, and others.

In 2023, the top spot on the sales chart was taken by the Kawasaki Z900 which dominated the Indian market with sales of 947 units. This is 659 units more than the Triumph Street Triple which has taken the second spot on the list with sales of 288 units in 2023.

The popularity of the Z900 can be attributed to its aggressive naked sport design complemented by a powerful 948 cc liquid-cooled in-line four-cylinder engine. This power unit produces 123 bhp of power and 98.6 Nm of peak torque while revving at 7,700 rpm. All of this is currently offered at a starting price of 9.38 lakh (ex-showroom).

Meanwhile, the third spot on the list is taken by the third generation of the Suzuki Hayabusa which sold 271 units. Similarly, the fourth and fifth spots are taken by Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R and Kawasaki Versys 650, respectively. The ZX-10R recorded sales of 238 units while the Versys 650 sold 191 units.

It is worth mentioning that Kawasaki had their best sales ever in 2023 and captured a market share of over 50 percent. This success can be credited to the presence of international models in India at competitive pricing.
